In the First Season we begin to get a better sense of the personalities of each girl before and after Alison's death. Alison was the leader of the group and things were always said and done her way. Spencer is a perfectionist who's always trying to outdo her over-achiever sister Melissa, and she was the only one in the group to stand up to Alison. Hanna, used to be overweight and she was so desperate to be popular that she would do anything Alison would tell her to do. Aria, was just simply a former outsider. And Emily is a competitive swimmer who has very strict and over-protective parents.

After the mysterious death of Alison, each member of the group went their separate ways. However, three years later the girls reunite and Aria comes back form Iceland feeling more beautiful, confident, and stylish. She even begins an affair with her English teacher Ezra Fitz. Hanna looses a lot of weight by making herself throw up and begins to shoplift as well. She becomes the new social leader of Rosewood Day. Spencer continues being her overachieving self and falls for her sister's boyfriend. Emily comes out to her friends and family that she is a lesbian and is in love with the new girl at school Maya. As the plot continues the mysterious "A" keeps texting the girls unnerving things that make the four friends nervous and scared. However, they are willing to do whatever is necessary to find who this mysterious "A" is and why wont he/she leave them alone.
